The PreComp channel strip is a combination mic preamplifier and compressor made for the popular 500 series rack format and designed to bring greater efficiency to the recording process by simplifying the signal path and gain stage management.

The single wide module begins with a high performance preamp that can deliver in excess of 60dB to handle all types of microphones. Equipped with Radials unique Accustate gain control, the PreComp simultaneously sets the output and sensitivity to maximize signal-to-noise at all levels. This is particularly important when recording in the digital domain where background noise can often be audible during quiet passages. A full-feature VCA compressor follows with adjustable threshold, compression ratio and gain make-up controls. The advanced compression algorithm reads the program material and automatically transitions from soft-knee to hard knee as the signal rises above the threshold. A simple slow-fast switch makes it easy to set the PreComp for either vocals or percussion.

Once connected to a 500 series power rack, connections to and from the PreComp are automatically routed to the XLRs for balanced operation. When used with a Workhorse, connectivity increases with ¼" TRS connectors and D-Subs while the Omniport provides direct patching to the preamp or the compressor, enabling the engineer to use each processor separately. Other features include 180° polarity reverse for phase matching two microphones, a high pass filter to eliminate unwanted resonance, 48V phantom power for condenser mics and an IN/OUT switch that lets you quickly compare the original uncompressed signal with the processed result.

This makes the PreComp an excellent choice for recording, broadcast and post production suites where instant control over voice and instrument is desired. The PreComp will also be a favorite for multi-channel live recording engineers where the small footprint can accommodate many input channels in a higher density rack.

PreComp for voice-over in post production

The PreComp is the perfect channel strip for recording a voice-over in post production or tracking a vocal when recording. Plug your mic in, set the mic level, then add a touch of compression to level the signal and keep it out of the red. The PreComp is quick and easy to use.

Using the PreComp in a broadcast studio

The PreComp is the perfect front-end for on-air broadcast. Set the level, add the appropriate amount of compression to ensure the voice is maximised and let the show begin! For greater tonal control, add the Q4 parametric EQ into the signal chain using the Omniport 1/4" TRS insert.

Using the PreComp for live recording

Use the PreComp to capture the signals right from the microphones and keep the dynamics under control to prevent distortion. Split the signal by using the ¼" TRS output on the Workhorse to feed the recorder and the XLR out to feed the PA system.

We ship with UPS or FedEx. If you require a specific carrier, please contact us ahead of time or leave a note in the "message to seller" field at checkout stating that preference. If you need the item faster, please choose from the expedited UPS options listed on the page. Please be aware that your order may ship "Signature Required" to avoid the unpleasant experience of a lost or stolen package. Residents of Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico should contact us for a shipping quote.

If your purchase has been damaged in shipping, or if the product is not as represented, then well take it back. Just send us an email and let us know. We want you to be happy with your purchase.

We provide free shipping via UPS or FedEx Ground to the contiguous 48 United States, on most items.

Shipping fees to other locations will be calculated and added to customer invoices. Local duties, taxes and charges are not included in the sale price or ship charges. Westlake Pro is not responsible for any taxes, duties, or fees outside of California and/or the USA. In the event that the customer refuses a shipment, all shipping costs are not refunded. Please note that in some cases return shipping can cost as much as double the original ship cost.

We offer a 15-day return period. Items must be returned with all original packaging as well as all included items. Items that are not returned in original, resalable condition are subject to a 15% restocking fee. We charge a 15% restocking fee on returned items only if the item is clearly used and or the packing is tarnished. A 10% re-stock is more likely if the unit comes back in mint condition. The ship cost we paid Fedex to ship your item will be deducted as well. In some cases restock fees and ship costs can be applied as a store credit.

We will exchange a defective unit for the same unit within the 30-day period.

Items that can not be returned include: software, units with contents or packaging that is damaged/missing, and items that are considered for personal use (such as earphones, headphones, microphones, instrument mouthpieces, or other items that you wouldnt want to purchase if someone else had previously used them). Also, Items which we do not normally stock (i.e. "Special Orders", discontinued products, close-outs, used products, etc.) are non-returnable. We strongly suggest that you check your order after receiving it to be sure that it is in proper working order.

Shipping and handling costs are non-refundable, including a reasonable ship cost calculated into free US shipping best offer prices.

Please contact us for our Return Form and return ship instructions before returning any items. Upon receipt of the returned product a credit will be issued according to your payment method. If any product is damaged in shipping, you should address the issue promptly with the appropriate carrier. Any return sent back without a processed return form will not be processed.
